(1) How to make money online in 2018? (2) What are the ways for college students to make money? (3) Moreover, what are the EASY ways to make money while in college?
Don’t worry, you’ll have your questions answered because in this post, you will learn about 10 ways you can use to make money (online) as a college student.
Chances are if you are on this page, you are a college student who can’t find a job that is flexible with your school schedule and are desperately looking for ways to earn extra cash.
I graduated from York University in 2015 and I thought that it would be a good idea to share my personal experience and knowledge on how you can make money (online) while still being a student.
I really hope this article will help you find your own favourite way to make extra cash.
Keep in mind that whatever you like doing or whatever you are good at, you will be able to find at least one option below that suits YOU best.
For example, if you like making videos, you can explore the option of making money with Youtube; and if you like writing, you could consider the possibility of becoming a blogger or being a self-published author.
The great thing these examples is that they can bring you passive income, if you know what you are doing!
And I am here to help you with that.
In some cases, within the post, I will also include a review and/or will recommend certain things/products I personally tried and can vouch for, in case you need further information.
To make it easier for everyone, first I will talk about the non-online related options to make money as a college student.
Please DO ask if you have any questions in the comments area below!
My goal here is to help you find your best option with making extra bucks while being a college student and I will gladly answer all your questions to the best of my ability. 🙂
Alright, let’s get started.
Non-Online Related Ways For College Students To Make Extra Cash
1. Sell Notes/Old Paper Works/Books
This is definitely one of the options I personally used during my time at York University.
For most courses I was enrolled in, I had excellent, typed-up notes which could definitely increase another student’s chances to ace the course (like I did).
Depending on the course and the amount of work done for these courses, I’d sell the notes for $400-500 Canadian dollars.
I also sold a couple of my paper works to students but it was not my favorite option to do WHILE being a student myself.
What I mean is that if the buyer were to completely copy-paste my work, there could be repercussions from the institution for BOTH parties.
(That is, not only for the person who plagiarized the work but also for the person who sold the paperwork).
In this case, I’d rather suggest you to sell high school essays to high school students for example; or choose wisely in terms of who you are selling your college paperwork to.
Selling books is definitely a way to make extra cash while in college. Especially if these books are academic and are still part of the curriculum for next year students.
If you check Facebook, I am sure you will find a lot of groups created by students of your college/university to sell books, notes, or paper works.
It’s one of the easiest ways college students make money so you might want to take advantage of that too.
2. Make Money With Uber On Your Own Terms
If you have a car or you drive your parents’ car, then you might want to consider partnering up with Uber to make extra money.
One time I ordered Uber to get to downtown Toronto and I had a nice conversation with a young guy, who worked with Uber to make money on the side.
He told me that it was a convenient way to cover his life expenses, made enough cash to go out when he wanted to, and what’s most important is that he could work on his OWN schedule.
An example he gave is that whenever he wanted to go out with friends in downtown Toronto, he would turn on some button on an app and would drive people from his location (Newmarket) to a similar location that he himself was heading to (downtown Toronto).
That’s how we met, by the way.
I am not aware of all the details of how Uber works, but I definitely see some great opportunities here for college students to make money on the side, while being flexible with time and place.
In order to apply to Uber, all you need is:
Being 21 years of age
Having a valid driver’s license and insurance
Vehicle model year 2001 or newer (2006 in some cities)
Passing a background check
In my opinion, this is definitely one of the easiest ways to make extra money.
Especially if you drive around a lot and actually enjoying this process. If you consider this option to earn extra money as a college student, you can check out Uber career opportunities.
One of the great and easy ways to make money on the side is with Airbnb if you have property.
Airbnb is a popular app/program that allows travelers to rent out a place when they visit new places and a host to make extra money on the side.
You have the option to choose for how long you can rent out your property (one night, one week, one month etc) and the nice thing is that Airbnb provides a $1,000,000 guarantee for any damage that the renters caused.
It would be safe to assume that not all college students have their own property, so as an option, you can talk to your parents and use their property to rent out a room or a basement to Airbnb customers and have your share of the earnings.
If you happen to live with AirBNB’ers on the same property, it will also be a great way to meet new people and learn about different cultures 🙂
Based on their rating system, you can also choose whether you want to rent out your space to a particular renter or not (I personally find it important).
Check the video below on how Airbnb hosts are living a richer life:
Keep in mind that the better is the quality and originality, the higher is your chance to be a best-selling digital photographer.
3. Get Paid For Testing Websites
I definitely find testing websites being quite an easy kind of a job.
I’ve tried it in the past and if you need some extra cash while being flexible with school, you might want to consider this option.
How does it work?
Usertesting.com helps companies improve their user experience thanks to user-testers. Whenever you provide a 20-minute video review of a website or an app, you get paid $10 via PayPal (or $15 if it’s mobile).
Below you will find a wonderful review by YouTube vlogger B-Dub on how she makes side cash with UserTesting in very little time:
It’s a pretty awesome way to make extra money, especially for college students who need to be flexible with time.
However, Usertesting isn’t something I have time to do every single day. Some days are much better than others, in terms of being qualified for the tests.
4. Tutor/Give Lessons Online
If you like teaching and would like to teach others something that you are skilled at – singing, dancing, languages etc- then I can suggest two platforms for you to try out.
First is the TakeLessons platform.
I personally didn’t use it but heard about it from fellow freelancers.
With TakeLessons you will need to fill out their application, complete a background check and agree to their independent contractor terms.
Once you get a student, you will start getting 60% of what he/she pays, and for every 5 lessons you teach, you’ll make 10% more of that student’s price, which equals to 90% of what you can make with TakeLessons.
Another platform is iTalki, which is a language-only tutoring platform.
This is something I myself tried and I am still a part of the language community (I love learning foreign languages).
iTalki is a worldwide community with more than a million of language learners and over a thousand of language teachers/community tutors. Founded in 2007, now it has impressive social media presence with over 50,000 Facebook followers.
How does it work?
You can apply as a “Professional Teacher” (with a degree and other relevant certificates) or as a “Community Tutor” (just native speakers without degrees whatsoever).
After you fill out their application, you will be listed in their large database of language teachers/community tutors, so that students can book a session with you via Skype or free VOIP software.
The sessions can take from 30 minutes to two hours. Once the learning/teaching session is complete, you will be credited the iTalki currency (10 iTalki credits = 1 USD).
Make sure to create a good profile with a great introduction video, so that students want you as their language teacher.
How much does it pay?
As I mentioned earlier, iTalki works with credits system where 10 iTalki credits are equivalent to 1 US dollar.
You are allowed to set your own price for the teaching sessions, which usually ranges from $10 to $30 per hour.
iTalki takes 15% cut of your earning and the rest can be withdrawn once a month via PayPal, Alipay, Webmoney, and Moneybookers.
If you are like me and love learning foreign languages, thenI am giving you $10 USD in iTalki credits to learn a language. (I’ve been a member for a while, which means that I can give 10 dollars will be off your first purchase with a language teacher).
This is the first time I decided to use the iTalki credits promotion, so please let me know in the comments if it went through!
5. Make Money With YouTube
Frankly, I am not quite familiar with it but I can provide you with basic information on how it works.
In a nutshell, you create creative/how-to/funny quality videos on Youtube and by displaying ads on your videos, you get a percentage of the income generated by clicks on these ads.
How much can you earn?
I am not 100% sure but I heard that you may earn from $3 to $10 per 1,000 views. The more popular you are, the higher is your income online.
Blogging is by far my favorite way to generate solid income online.
If you always wanted to create your own website that generates revenue for years to come, then it will be your favorite income stream too.
Even though building a website is dumb easy in 2018, the process of building an online business ITSELF may not necessarily be easy in the beginning since it does take time and efforts on your part.
BUT, it will definitely make your life easier in the long run by bringing you passive income.
Newbies always ask how long does it take them to start making money online with a website and my answer is:
“I don’t know”.
The results vary from one person to another, depends on how much they put efforts, if they have proper guidance and if they follow the step by step system which DOES bring you earnings with your website.
How Much Do Bloggers Earn?
In my other articles, I mentioned some successful bloggers with the screenshots of their income, so I am sharing the links here for you to check out:
(Also, stay tuned for my new Amazon website case study posts.)
These are real people, who made a full-time living with their blogs/websites.
I am sure it wasn’t easy for them in the beginning, but now they reap the rewards of success thanks to their dedication, hard work and having proper guidance and support.
Now, if you will consider this option, here is one serious benefit of creating a website while still being in college: you can bring your traffic (people) to your website through your college connections.
For example, often times, college students belong to Facebook groups when there is a lot of engagement and since you’re known and have authority within your group, you could easily post the link to your website in such groups.
And when you will start making money with your websites, students around you will logically wonder how do you do it.
Yet another way to bring traffic onto your website.
The main purpose of this blog is to share my personal experience and make it VERY easy for you to understand how online business works and how you can make money online using ETHICAL methods.
